Consider removing the word “should” from your day to day conversations with other people. Don’t “should” all over someone.
Here’s why…
Should isn’t a great word to use when recommending or suggesting actions to anyone else.
You should do this, you should do that.
What’s the definition of “should”?
“should” a verb:
used to indicate obligation, duty, or correctness, typically when criticizing someone’s actions.
—
That’s not very good. Especially when we say it to other people, we’re strongly recommending a correct course of action to them, even though you’re not them. And when we do it to ourselves, we’re just being highly critical of ourself.
Here are 2 healthy alternatives.
“You might consider” or “you could”.
You could do this, you could do that.
You might consider doing this.
—–
What feels better?
I should go to the gym.
I should save more money.
I should call my best friend.
I should start a business.
I should find a job.
I should get married.
I should break up.
I should go to school and get a job.
I should quit and start my own business.
vs.
I could go to the gym.
I could save more money.
I could call my best friend.
I could start a business.
I could find a job.
I could get married.
I could break up.
I could go to school and get a job.
I could quit school and start my own business.
Here’s how could is defined,
“could” a verb:
used to indicate possibility.
– “they could be right”
used in making polite requests.
– “could I use the phone?”
—
It’s a lot lighter, it’s also full of possibility.
Everything is possible, you shouldn’t have to do anything, everything is an option. You could do that, you could do this.
Isn’t that the reality anyways?
I mean we all could do absolutely nothing, and decay, and be fine with it. We cause ourselves so much distress of everything we should do, acting like if we just did that, life would be better. It’s all an option. You could do anything.
Choose your own life, you could do this, you could do that.
Be free from feeling obligated and guilty if you don’t do something.
You could try removing the world should from your day to day conversations, or you could not.
You can choose!
You might seriously consider it though if you want a greater piece of mind!
